Vilma Tihilä (b.1991) is Finnish director, choreographer and filmmaker specializing in dance film. The key elements in her filmmaking are physicality of the moving image, a poetry of film and choreography in the editing. Tihilä’s work reaches towards the ideas which can be accessed with intuition and physicality,
combining contemporary dance, physical expression and new music in her work.
Tihilä holds Master of Arts in Screendance from London Contemporary Dance School and a degree in contemporary dance from Turku Conservatory. She has also studied music theory and opera at Sibelius Academy Helsinki and physical cinema at Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Tihilä’s most recent dance films Call of the Cranes (2023), Carried in Silence (2023) and A Portrait (2022) are award winning films in Italy, Brazil, UK, and Portugal. In October 2023 Tihilä held her first solo exhibition in Asbestos Art Space gallery in Helsinki, Finland.
Tihilä's work has been performed and screened at various theatres and festivals internationally including Loikka Dance Film Festival in Finland, Quinzena de Dança de Almada in Portugal, F-O-R-M Festival in Canada, and Fatej Festival in Cameroon, among others.
